New to Aji Annotate? Use the following steps to quickly get started working with your PDF documents; or see the rest of this User Guide for more detailed information.
- Download and Install the Aji Reader Service: Use the Mac or Windows download. Note: Aji Annotate and Aji Reader both use the same Aji Reader Service application. If you have already downloaded and installed the Service, you may skip this step.
- Add one or more Shared Folders: Using the Aji Reader Service, add one or more folders that contain PDF files that you'd like to read in Aji Annotate.
- Fetch the documents: In Aji Annotate, tap the "Fetch" tab, choose "Fetch from Aji Server", and then tap the orange "Download" icon for your server.
- Read and annotate your documents: When the download is complete, tap the "Browse" button to find your PDF documents. You may now start reading and annotating!
- Update and View your Annotations on your computer: After you have annotated a document, tap the "Upload" icon to transfer the annotated document to your computer. Aji Annotate uses PDF standard annotations that can be reviewed in Adobe Reader or Preview.
That's it!
| What's New in Version 2.5 | (Back to Top) |
Version 2.5 brings several new features to Aji Annotate:
- Improved Annotation Viewing/Editing: Annotations now have integrated popup editing controls, which allow for quick editing and display of the contents of note annotations directly on the page. The new Auto-Popup behavior automatically displays the contents of note annotations as you scroll, without even having to tap.
- Markup Annotations: Aji Annotate now supports text-sensitive highlight, underline, and strikeout annotations.
- Straight-Line Annotations: In addition to finger annotations, you can now create straight lines by dragging your finger from the start point to the end point.
- Text Selection: You can now select and copy text content directly from PDF files using the standard iPhone 3.0 copy/paste interface. All controls have been updated to support copy/paste.
- Single-Page Mode: You can now choose to read documents one page at a time in addition to the normal continuous page mode. This improves responsiveness on some large PDF files and also offers significantly better resolution for documents with large pages or a high level of detail.
- Improved Search: Full-library Search now allows you to include multiple terms when searching for documents in your entire PDF library. Document search now handles punctuation and international characters.
- Tap-to-Zoom: Tap once on the Page Locator view to zoom all the way out; tap again to return to your previous zoom level and location.
- Mail PDFs: In-app support for mailing PDF documents.
- Accessibility: UI controls have been labeled and marked with appropriate traits for accesibility, and PDF contents can be read by VoiceOver as well when the text is available in the PDF (on supported devices, such as the 3GS).
- Rendering engine improvements: with each update, we're fine-tuning our PDF rendering engine; this update should bring noticeable improvements, especially when dealing with large PDF documents and zooming. Higher resolution is also available when using Single-Page Mode.
| Upgrading from earlier versions of Aji Annotate | (Back to Top) |
PDF documents which are used with previous versions of Aji Annotate will require new metadata in order to enable some of the new features of Aji Annotate 2.5. After upgrading to Aji Annotate 2.5 via the App Store, be sure to download the latest version of Aji Reader Service for Mac or Windows.
Once the new version of Aji Reader Service is installed and running on your desktop, connect your device to your desktop. To verify the connection, check if you are able to go the Fetch tab and browse your shared folder(s). Once the connection is successfully made, Aji Annotate will automatically download the new metadata onto your device. For best results, do not end the connection until all the documents on your device have been updated with new metadata. Once the new metadata is on your device, you will be able to access the new features of Aji Annotate 2.5.
| Upgrading from Aji Reader | (Back to Top) |
Aji Annotate has all of the same features that you're used to in Aji Reader, and it adds the ability to annotate your documents.
For more details on using the annotation-specific features, see Creating Annotations and Transferring Annotated Documents to your Computer.
| Upgrading from Annotater (v1.5 or earlier) | (Back to Top) |
Aji Annotate is a significant upgrade from our earlier Annotater app: we've redesigned the user interface, added several new features, and optimized the PDF drawing, document transfer, and annotation update components. As a result, Aji Annotate is almost a completely different application than Annotater; however, all of the features from Annotater are still present (in a slightly new form).
When upgrading, the best practice is to re-download all of your existing PDF files from your computer (if you still have them). The Aji Reader Service will remember the same saved folders from before, so you should have the same setup after installing the Aji Reader Service. Then, after Aji Annotate has connected, you can use the "Fetch All" button for your service to re-download all of your PDFs.
Note that the Aji Reader Service will re-process your PDF files during this process, since the new version includes new PDF metadata.
If you don't re-download files from your computer, you can still read them in Aji Annotate; however, you will get a warning about the metadata being not up-to-date. If you read such a file and Aji Annotate can connect to the Aji Reader Service on your computer, then it will automatically connect and re-download the required metadata, so that the next time you read the file it will be up-to-date.
Those are the main issues to keep in mind when upgrading; otherwise, the app should function in much the same way as before, but of course with the addition of the new 2.5 features!
